Treatment Steps

The proposed steps for treatment of Battleground are as follows:

1. The conservators from the Upper Midwest Conservation Association will begin with a thorough examination of the painting. A written report that documents the painting’s present condition and proposal for treatment will be prepared. Photographs are taken before, during and after treatment.

2. Conservators will begin with the removal of dirt, grime, old varnish with special solutions that won’t damage the painting.

3. The next step is to clean the reverse of the painting to remove any dirt, dust or debris. The tacking margins will be repaired and the painting will be applied to a custom modified strainer to make the painting more rigid and improve stability.

4. Cosmetic concerns will now be addressed with a nonyellowing, stable synthetic resin varnish being applied to the painting.

5. Areas of the painting where there is a loss of paint or disfiguring cracks will be filled, and inpainted with a stable, nonyellowing, synthetic resin medium.

6. A protective backing board will be secured to the reverse of the strainer to keep out dirt and debris, prevent impact damage and enhance the strainer’s structural stability.

7. The painting will then be re-framed in a new, stronger more appropriate frame.

8. As the final step, the conservator writes a report detailing all aspects of the treatment.
