The South Dakota Art Museum understands the importance towards education. We take great strides in creating educational programs that are fulfilling for all our visitors. Our public programs are geared to engage all visitors. We offer a variety of public programs throughout the year including artist talks, lectures, demonstrations, children and adult workshops, and Family Days.

We Are The Palliars ( 2009)

Q & A with Filmmaker Nicholas Knutzen

A short documentary about a group of indigenous tribal villagers living in South India (in the state of Tamil Nadu).  The Palliars have been living in these hills for some 4,000 years - pre-dating Hinduism.  Not more than fifty years ago, the modern world came into their existence and, now, they are being forced out of their sacred land.  Filmmaker Nicholas Knutzen will be present for Q & A session following showing.  60 minutes.

Four Wives - One Man (Sweden/Iran, 2007)

Avoiding sensationalism and sentimentality, this documentary provides unique insights into the practice of polygamy and its effect on the women involved in a rural Iranian village.  Directed by Nahid Persson.  76 minutes.

Why We Laugh:  Black Comedians on Black Comedy (USA, 2008)

Inspired by comedian Darryl Littleton's book, Why We Laugh is a sweeping account of the evolution and cultural influences of black comedy in America.  Director Robert Townsend interviewed notable comics, including Bill Cosby, Chris Rock, Kennan Ivory Wayans and Eddie Griffin.  95 minutes.

 

The Black American Experience in Film Mini Series --

Prom Night in Mississippi, Trouble the Water, More than a Game, and Why We Laugh:  Black Comedians on Black Comedy are co-sponsored by the President's Advisory Council on Diversity, the Diversity Office and the South Dakota State University Department of Journalism and Mass Communication.

***All films are sponsored by SDSU Student Film Society and SDSU Student Association, South Dakota Art Museum, Margaret Denton, Dakota Rural Action, Sierra Club, South Dakota Humanities Council and the SDSU Department of Journalism and Mass Communication.

***All film showings are FREE and open to the public and will be shown in the South Dakota Art Museum Alumni Auditorium beginning at 7 pm unless otherwise stated.
