We offer the following programs for teachers:
-
South Dakota Social Studies Teacher Packet: In conjunction with the Fourth Grade South Dakota School Standards in
Social Studies, we have developed a packet that will assist teachers in teaching their fourth grade students the
social studies of South Dakota. The packet is currently under
revision and is due to be released in its new form early next
fall. The packet will focus on notable South Dakotans. Contact
our Curator of Education to reserve your copy.
-
Dakota Digital Network (DDN – live video conferencing): Nearly every public and private school in South Dakota is equipped with technology that allows live video conferencing. We want to take our galleries into these classrooms. With assistance from the South Dakota Department of Education, we plan on launching this program starting this winter and spring. A virtual live gallery tour will be offered to all South Dakota schools grades 3-6.
-
Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS): Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) is a visual arts program for elementary school students and teachers that use art to teach thinking, communication skills, and visual literacy. Growth is stimulated by three things: looking at art of increasing complexity, responding to developmentally-based questions, and participating in group discussions that are carefully facilitated by teachers trained in the VTS program. This program is already being offered to grades k-6 throughout the country.
-
Group tours: The South Dakota Art Museum offers a rich variety of school tours designed for elementary through high school students and teachers. These tours introduce works of art and methods for teaching with objects, explore interdisciplinary curriculum applications, and support State and/or District Model Academic Standards.
-
ART:21 educational videos: Art:21 creates a range of visual and print educational materials to accompany the broadcast series. These materials are designed to give teachers, museum educators, librarians, and community members the greatest flexibility in using the Art:21 series in schools, museums, teacher training workshops, and community-based education programs.
Materials can be used to, introduce contemporary art, explore
ideas, topics, or media, and learn about individual artists. To
schedule tours or to learn more about our wonderful educational
opportunities call 1-866-805-7590 (toll free).
