HARVEY DUNN
GRASSLAND PRESERVATION PROJECT
“The Prairie Trail” is the
official print of the Harvey Dunn Grassland Preservation Project. The
money from the sale of this print will be used for the purpose of
obtaining non-federal matching funds. These funds will purchase
easements from willing landowners.
Each print sold will protect one
acre of grassland and sells for $400 plus shipping.
Print is 25.5" high x 34.5" wide
(outside dimensions).

The
goal of the Harvey Dunn Grassland Preservation Project (Project) is to
perpetually protect 24,000 acres of grasslands by purchasing U. S. Fish
and Wildlife Service (FWS) easements. South Dakota’s grasslands are
rapidly being converted to cropland, which results in declining wildlife
habitat and scenic prairie vistas.
This Project will focus on the area that most influenced
Harvey Dunn as he developed his memories of grasslands and homesteading
on the tall grass prairies of Kingsbury and Brookings Counties. The
Dunn homestead quarter remains in an undisturbed grassland condition.
The property is no longer owned by the family, however, is owned by a
local cattleman wanting to sell the FWS a grassland easement on this
quarter as well as 7 other quarters that he owns. He is currently on a
list of 75 willing landowners in Kingsbury and Brookings Counties
waiting for potential easement offers. FWS easements stay in private
ownership, protect the grasslands from farming, and provide valuable
plant and wildlife habitat protection.
What is a Giclee reproduction?
A Giclee is a new technology in printmaking. Giclees
are made with large format high end professional inkjet printers. Giclee
is a French word meaning “to spray.” Instead of being pressed
on the surface of the paper as in traditional offset printing, these
inks are sprayed giving the resulting reproductions a far richer look
that more closely resembles an original. Thousands of dots are sprayed
in a fine mist on the paper. Giclee reproductions from high end professional
printers produce a fineness of detail and richness of color unavailable
in traditional reproductions.
